Well, I got what I wanted last night. The gloves definitely came off in Iowa, as GOP candidates battled each other in hopes of winning Saturday’s Ames Straw Poll, or in an attempt to gain voter support. For those who are not familiar, the Ames Straw Poll occurs after the Iowa Presidential Debate as sort of a mock election. This poll gives great insight into how that candidate will realistically win, or lose their ass. For example George W. Bush won in 1999, and then later became President in 2000. For some of these eight candidates, Saturday’s poll may be the end of their Presidential run.
Moving back to the debate last night… I think there was no comparison to the fight between Tim Pawlenty and Michelle Bachmann. The gloves were OFF. Pawlenty slammed Bachmann by telling her “It’s an indisputable fact that her record of accomplishment and results is nonexistent,” accused her of making “misstatements,” and said to Bachmann“If that’s your view of effective leadership with results, please stop, because you’re killing us.” Wow.
As Pawlenty attacked Bachmann, she stared straight forward into the audience, not giving Pawlenty the satisfaction of her looking him in the eye. Bachmann’s icy stare to match her icy outfit maintained that gaze until it was her turn to bat. Bachmann tore into Pawlenty, now staring him down, as she said, “When you were governor in Minnesota, you implemented cap and trade in our state and you praised the unconstitutional individual mandate…You said the era of small government is over. That sounds a lot more like Barack Obama if you ask me.” WOW. I think Bachmann took that round.
Bachmann has been blazing the campaign trail in an attempt to gain voter support, but I felt her appearance last night was all too rehearsed, almost robotic, as if her handlers spoon fed her every single word. I will admit that I was outraged at the loaded question when asked about if she was President, would she be submissive to her husband. That question is exactly what is wrong with the political world. As ready as the world claims to be for women in power, the women who aspire to reach power are constantly bashed with these sexist questions. Totally unfair. I did feel she handled that biased question with grace, so props to you Michelle.
The Minnesota boxing match was not the only fight on last nights stage. Front runner Mitt Romney was taking jabs from all sides, handling the attack with grace and a smile. Pawlenty apparently hadn’t had enough from his fight with Bachmann, so he began jabbing at Romney with statements calling Romney’s health care plan in Massachusetts “Obomneycare”. That seemed to be a common theme with the candidates, to try and label their opponents with popular Tea Party issues like Cap and Trade and Individual Mandate. Pawlenty’s campaign couldn’t hold a flame to Romney’s highly successful, and wealthy campaign. Pawlenty is much lesser known, and does not have half the financing that Romney has. I think after his attack dog attitude, he will fizzle out quickly in the race.
Romney seemed to break from his rehearsed stereotypical politician shtick for the first time, although still seemed rehearsed in saying “I have a SEVEN-point plan…” *yawn*. There were moments where he seemed to be adapting as he NEEDS to to attract voters who are more concerned with personality and authenticity in their potential President. Perhaps my favorite Romney line of the night, was when he said he “wasn’t going to eat Barack Obama’s dog food…” when asked why he was late to join the other candidates in opposing raising the debt-ceiling. Regardless, it seemed that Romney emerged victorious last night, and will continue to maintain his lead.
Moving on toRon Paul. Guess what folks, he hasn’t changed his message, and he isn’t going ANYWHERE. I hve always felt like Ron Paul is one of the most real, honest, intelligent candidates to ever run for office in my lifetime. Dr. Paul seemed the most unrehearsed, and seemed to have the most crowed support. I just WISH that his foreign policy were different, because his views are so drastically different from most mainstream Conservatives. However, when Dr. Paul spoke on foreign policy, he brought the crowed to its feet by saying “we just don’t mind our business anymore” in wanting the US to practice a more isolationist policy. I don’t see Ron Paul as going anywhere yet… His supporters are amped up and want to propel him further along in this race.
Now, Newt Gingrich… Newt was something else last night. He had a smartass tone to him as the night progress, and came out swinging. He kept me completely entertained as I sipped on my cocktail during last night’s debate. It seemed as if he was swinging, not only at the other candidates, but also at the moderators and host Bret Baier for his campaign frustrations and for feeling like he was receiving “gotcha questions,” such as the one Baier asked about Libya and his apparent flip-flop statement. Aside from complaining about everything from loaded questions, to ill-intended political advisers, Gingrich managed to shine as the man with a plan, which resonates with voters. He offered new ideas and solutions, and I think that will keep him in the race, at least for a little while longer. Gingrich is not participating in Saturdays Straw Poll.
Finally, the rest of them… Santorum, Huntsman, Cain… Lets admit it, they are not going to be relevant much longer. Starting with Santorum… While he performed well in the debate, and was able to rattle Ron Paul on his less than mainstream foreign policy, he remains only popular with SOCIAL Conservatives, and that isn’t enough to win this battle. Perhaps his most memorable moment last night was when he asked why we spare a rapist from execution, yet would murder the child who was conceived from rape… I don’t even want to touch that issue. I am sick and tired of these far right social Conservatives running on the ABORTION card… Its irrelevant folks. Move on to something else that actually matters right now.
Cain delivered a decent performance, but I struggle not to picture Cleveland from the television show family guy every time he talks… But I digress. Cain is a solid debater, as he has solid answers, and offers an outstanding business background that brings something new to the table. While he did well, it is just hard for Cain to gain serious momentum with his lack of experience on things like foreign policy. Cain will stay in the race for a while, but I can’t see a situation where he is ever a front-runner.
And last, and least, Huntsman. Well, he was there, and he was irrelevant. He had a poor performance and I suspect will disappear after Saturday’s poll. He clutched the podium as if he was going to vomit or pass out, but made strides with right of center Conservatives by saying, “I also believe in civil unions because I think this nation can do a better job when it comes to equality.” While this will not resonate with the average Republican, it brought a round of applause to the group I was watching with.
All in all, it was a rather eventful debate, chock full of one liners. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and look forward to many more boxing matches. Now to see what will happen as Perry enters the race on Saturday in wake of the Straw Poll. More on that later.

[...] Jessica Cybulski put together another view of the debate with some interesting thoughts. You can read her full post here, but I’ll post a summary below. [...]
[...] UPDATE: See Jessica Cybulski’s post on the debate here. [...]
Your analysis of the debate is interesting, but we all have our “Opinions” here. As for your remark about “Abortion” being a far-right talking point; it is a pity that you consider it a far-right talking point, because that is what is entirely wrong with this country, and why we’re burning as Rome did. You’ve got too many people passing off brutal murder of innocent unborns as though it were passe’. When Americans can find a reason to believe in God and his Commandments, we’ll see things straighten out; otherwise, we haven’t got a chance in a million that USA won’t go down in flames. You think our economy problems are because of just X,Y and Z, but God is punishing this nation in a big way, and He is also punishing the world for their ignorance of His Holy Commandments. Yes…I’m a far-righter in your opinion, but it is a FACT. God will not Bless a Country which murders babies. Plain and Simple. I don’t see any resurrection from our failed policies, until we get back to the Ten Commandments.
I never said I approve of abortion or support it. I simply said that focusing on social issues NOT ON THE BALLOT OR UP FOR DEBATE is what is WRONG with the Republican party, and alienates you not only from younger voters, but from right of center conservatives. People like you, who attack people for saying what is TRUE, are not moving our party forward. God will bless any country and any people who believe in him… That is kind of in the Bible… God forgives sins of all kinds. While I do NOT support abortion and NEVER have, I do NOT feel that it is THEEEEE most important issue by ANY means in this upcoming election. However, I appreciate your damnation of the USA based on the fact that you are an anti-abortion activist. Kudos to you.
Also, your cleveage is a bit unmanaged here. Are you interested in Politics or Breast Enhancement?
Thank you for being a TOTAL asshole, my cleavage is REAL, and thank you for thinking my breasts are so fab that they are fake. They are not. Its 2011, and the site is PRETTY GIRL POLITICS, not UGLY GIRL WITH NO CLEAVAGE POLITICS. Kindly f-off.
Jess,
Enjoying your website. Just a reminder about a great man we both knew once said to me….” I nearly gave my life and did lose my leg defending the right of all people to say what they want. No matter if I agree or disagree with what they say. That is what makes America great.”
And I miss you Dad…………
As far as your picture, that falls in as freedom of choice. Another great liberty we enjoy as Americans! I may not agree with that exact photo, but that is my opinion, and will not fault you for it!
Keep up the good work and Love You,
Dad
to siteunseen: You took the words right out of my mouth. I believe it is this very issue which has brought about our current national situation in which we are dangling over the precipice. I pray for revival and repentance and that it might not be too late for us or future generations to experience the freedom and liberty that can only happen when we abide in God’s providence and obey His law.
Good luck with your new Blog.
Just a short comment. I could not agree more on your observation of Bachmann as being too studied, to rehearsed, and in general stiff.
After watching her I watched the Palin Hannity show. There is a huge contrast. Palin is animated, comes across as spontaneous, Stays with her message but not afraid to throw in an occasional side bar.
This race is getting unbelievable coverage by the media in spite of themselves. Some of it is way to funny. Chris Matthews is in meltdown.
I agree with siteunseen, zip up your shirt pretty girl unless you are advertising for something. Yes, God will judge nations who sacrifice innocent life, abort their own babies.
I’m not advertising for anything, Christine Scott. I’m under 30, its 2011 and a little CLEAVAGE won’t end the world my friend. If you live in such a sheltered world that you are so offended by some cleavage, then maybe you should move to a far away nation in, oh say, Africa, where you don’t have to be exposed to a young women and her cleavage. I do not support or defend abortion in anyway, and NEVER hinted that I did. Saying that ABORTION (a SOCIAL issue NOT on the ballot) IS irrelevant in this race/election, is TRUE. I never said anything about God, but I do believe that it is GOD’s right to judge as he sees fit, I believe the Bible would back me up on that one. Perhaps you should stop judging maam. God does not look kindly upon that.
Siteunseen’s statement illustrates one reason many people think far-right conservatives are NUTS. Trillions in debt isn’t God’s punishment–it’s bad policy, and the leadership we need right now is ECONOMIC. I am pro-life but you need to keep your eye on the target. Do you really believe that all we need to do is overturn Roe v. Wade and all our problems will be solved? Come on. (As to your second comment–since the name of Jessica’s blog is “pretty girl politics” I’m pretty sure her “unmanaged” look is intentional.)
Here’s what I posted on my blog (www.usalyright.blogspot.com) directly following the debate:
The two big winners tonight were Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.
As regular readers know, I’ve never been a fan of Romney (I just don’t trust him) and as for Newt… over the past few years he’s lost much of my respect via actions such as his “reluctant” support of TARP and by supporting government subsidized ethanol production – not to mention “private” actions that simply rub me the wrong way.
This said… I call ‘em as I see ‘em and what I saw tonight was two men – Gingrich and Romney – elevated themselves by their performances in my eyes.
The biggest loser?
Heck… it’s not even a close call! Tonight’s “Biggest Loser” was without doubt Chris Wallace.
Gingrich simply tore Wallace to pieces – and clawed a bit of flesh off moderator Bret Baier as well!
Michele Bachmann? Pawlenty went after her. Santorum went after her. (*SHRUG*)
The panel members questioning the candidates obviously had a pre-planned agenda to push Pawlenty and Bachmann into a brawl and they succeeded.
Santorum’s only shot at a VP slot is to take out Bachmann – so he tried his best. (*SHRUG*)
The thing is… while Bachmann didn’t do as well in this debate compared to the first debate, in my view Pawlenty put paid to any chance he ever had at winning the nomination and as for Santorum… as previously noted… he just had to take Bachmann out in order to preserve even the hope of a VP slot. He failed.
Huntsman? (Let’s put it this way: Jon Who…???)
Cain? He did o.k…. perhaps o.k. enough to be Secretary of Commerce in the next Republican Presidential administration.
Ron Paul? Hey… if I could make Ron Paul President of the United States I would, but the average American simply just doesn’t know enough to understand how right Ron Paul is on so many issues.
To bottom line it, at least based upon tonight’s debate, Newt Gingrich has emerged as a real contender for the VP slot under… well… any Republican candidate who becomes the eventual nominee.
(Heck… Newt may even have won the title “Dark Horse GOP Presidential Nominee” via his stellar performance tonight!)
That said… Michele Bachmann is also a strong contender for the VP slot.
To those who viewed Mitt Romney as the smart money odds on favorite for the GOP nod prior to tonight’s debate… (*PAUSE*)… even though I’m not one of you, I must state my opinion that following this evening’s debate… Mitt is (for the moment) leading the pack.
Ah… but what about Rick Perry, Sarah Palin and Rudy Giuliani?
I doubt Palin will run. I may be wrong. We’ll see.
Same with Giuliani.
Perry though… (*PAUSE*)… his “unofficial” entry into the race is about as “official” as it can get prior to an actual official announcement following filing all the necessary paperwork.
Perry’s candidacy is a game changer as I see it. The moment Perry enters the race, he becomes the new front runner – at least as far as I’m concerned.
Here’s the thing about Perry: he could choose Bachmann as his running mate and that would work… he could choose Gingrich as his running mate and that would work… he could choose Giuliani as his running mate and that would work…
Heck! He could even choose Sarah Palin as his running mate and… assuming she’d do it… that would make a mighty strong ticket and indeed draw all the oxygen out of the room.
(I know you Palin haters violently disagree… but you’re wrong; Palin would rehabilitate herself on the campaign trail with Rick Perry at the head of the ticket.)
Anyway… we’ll see what the newspapers, the “experts,” and the pundits have to say about the debate when the sun rises tomorrow and no doubt all through the weekend.
Thought Pawlenty made a major mistake attacking Bachmann on her lack of accomplishments. The Tea Party caucus is driving the spending debate. It would be business as usual otherwise. She is only one vote, you can’t blame her for the garbage Obama crams through the system.
There is a problem with this post.
First of all, there is no mention that Ron Paul won the straw poll with 40% of the vote. No other candidate broke double digits. The headline should be “RON PAUL DOMINATES IOWA STRAW POLL, Republicans to rethink platform?”
Second, the statement “I just WISH that [Ron Paul's] foreign policy were different, because his views are so drastically different from most mainstream Conservatives”. Is extremely problematic. Ron Paul’s foreign policy is much closer to mainstream AMERICA than that is that of the current “mainstream” republican party. Furthermore, the fact that Paul keeps winning straw polls indicates that mainstream conservatives are not nearly as supportive of foreign wars as Prettygirl would have us believe. The reason why the mainstream Republican party is NOT a part of mainstream AMERICA, and is increasingly losing its hold on mainstream conservatism, can be tied to the disastrous fallout of one administration: that of G.W. Bush.
The republicans, by wedding themselves to the criminal war policies of Bush, lost their hold on mainstream and became a small, beleaguered and besieged enclave of the country. In so doing they lost 2 houses and the presidency. They gained one house back because Obama was almost as disastrous for the democrats and because republicans started popping up vigorously denouncing the Bush wing of their party. It is only a matter of time before the republicans lose their grip not just on America, but on the American right. Prettygirl (PG) cannot pretend that the “mainstream” republican line on the wars represents even conservative opinion anymore, let alone America.
Both parties are becoming marginalized. Americans, conservative and liberal alike (but mostly conservative) are looking for alternatives. This is why Ron Paul is winning conservative straw polls.

Very interesting info !Perfect just what I was searching for! ginecologie
I really like your site
Great post, I emailed this to my girlfriend and they shared it too.
